Catch data while program writes into binary file

I have an application running and seems that it is writing constantly some log-data into the binary file. File is 99% not readable with text-editors. Is it possible with Quickmacros to catch what data the application writes into the log file or should I investigate into C/C++? Log file is with .dat extension. If you can point any direction I will be happy and I will do further research by myself - don't waist much time. Probably I will ask stupid questions in the future when I get really desperate
