Best way to get QM to output an ASCII symbol?

What is the best way to get QM to output an ASCII symbol. I am using a test editor that doesn't have a shortcut for outputting n-dashes, so I may as well program QM to output an n-dash directly (instead of getting it to replicate GUI actions).

Just type it in QM editor, like
outp "thesymbol"
key "thesymbol"

For n dash and othe Unicode characters it is easier in QM 2.3.0 or later, running in Unicode mode.
outp "–"
key "–"
